The Company
In just eight months, Spence Marketing had acquired a commercial customer base of over three hundred. However, in 1985, United Scientific, the company which owned the rights to MP 1000, filed for bankruptcy. Realizing the potential of the original technology, Spence contracted with a chemical engineer - who specialized in surfactant technology - for the purpose of research and development.
The chemical engineer had the ability and laboratory facilities to take the proprietary information given to Spence by United Scientific, along with information she had acquired through her own research, and create a formulation based on the original breakthrough technology. The new formulation had increased effectiveness without any of the problems - such as instability - that had hampered MP 1000.
Spence named the new product KC 1000 and received a Federal trademark through her newly formed corporation, KC Products, Inc.
Over the years, KC Products has developed or acquired other formulas based on the original breakthrough, including Eco 2000, which received Green Cross certification for biodegrading into only Carbon Dioxide, basic minerals, and water.
This innovative family of environmentally sensitive products has been sold in all fifty states through a 13-state network of distributors to end users in such diverse industries as: Forest Products, Food Services, Health Care Facilities, Janitorial, Automotive, Manufacturing Plants, Government Agences, and School Districts. Household use has also grown through word of mouth and has always been an important part of the marketing strategy.
